Reflecting on his debut in Hanoi last year, Shaw recalls how the vibrant atmosphere pushed him to adapt. “It was crazy, the atmosphere as well as the humidity. I just tried to enjoy every match, treating it like the Mosconi Cup and feeding off the crowd.” Competing in such an intense environment may have been new for many, but for Shaw he thrived under the conditions.

The final against Albin Ouschan was nothing short of a thriller. “The final was such a nail-biter—nothing better than a hill-hill match. I was down the entire match, but I just kept grinding and believing in myself. I can remember being 4-0 down, then 10-5 down, but I never gave up.” That relentless determination paid off, earning Shaw the title of the first-ever Hanoi Open champion in a match that exemplified his resilience.

Shaw speaks with pride about what makes the Hanoi Open unique. “The venue and the fans—it’s incredible how many pool fans are in Vietnam. Thousands of fans came to watch, and it makes you feel like a rock star. I love that type of atmosphere; it’s like a mini Mosconi Cup singles event.” Shaw is no stranger to playing in high-profile tournaments around the world, but the Hanoi Open, with its immense enthusiasm from the local crowd, stands out as a special experience.

Winning the first edition of the Hanoi Open has not drastically changed Shaw’s career, but it certainly reinforced his belief in his ability to win major World Nineball Tour tournaments. “Winning in Hanoi last year was amazing. I’m not sure it’s impacted my career that much, but it 100% shows me that I can win Matchroom major events.” As for the crowd, Shaw fondly recalls how their energy was instrumental in his performance. “Last year, the crowd was incredible. It was the best feeling ever, playing in any singles event that Matchroom has ever produced. The energy brings out the best in me, and I feel Mosconi vibes.”

Looking ahead at this year’s tournament, Shaw knows the competition will be fierce. “The Hanoi Open has one of the most competitive fields we’ve seen. With so many young players emerging, the level of competition keeps getting stronger.” Yet, ‘Eagle Eye’ remains confident, focusing on playing one match at a time. “Returning as the reigning champ, I just go about my business as usual—one match at a time and just keep focused.”

Off the table, Shaw is excited to soak in more of what Vietnam has to offer. “I’m looking forward to the amazing food, doing some more sightseeing, and meeting new fans.” This balance between his love for the game and his enjoyment of the culture surrounding the tournament helps Shaw stay grounded, even in the midst of the elite competition.

Beyond Hanoi, Shaw has his sights set on further victories in 2024, including a victory at the inaugural Reyes Cup. “Final goals this year—win Hanoi again, win Reyes Cup, try and win the International Open for the third time, and then take down the Mosconi.” It’s clear that Shaw’s ambitions remain as sharp as ever, and with the confidence of being the reigning Hanoi Open champion, he’s poised to continue making waves on the global stage.

As Shaw prepares to defend his title in Hanoi, fans can expect another thrilling performance from the British cueist, who thrives on the biggest stages and embraces the pressure of competition. His journey in Hanoi, from his dramatic victory last year to his return this year, is a testament to his skill, determination, and love for the game.
