Fedor Gorst (RUS) eliminated Joshua Filler (GER) with 9:8 in the single knockout round of the last 32 players from the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open 2020.
In the early stage of the match, Filler was dominant and got to an early 3:1 lead over Gorst. But the Russian did not want to let the gap get too big so he pulled some racks back from Filler. After six racks, the score was all square at 3:3. But Filler stayed sharp and recovered quickly to again take a 2-rack lead with 5:3. But once more, Gorst struck back and tied the match at 5:5. None of the two contestants was prepared to give an inch away to the opponent. In fact, he was able to take a 6:5 lead for the first time in the match. That was immediately equalised by Filler who got to 6:6. As the match continued, it was quite clear that the level of play was very levelled with none of the two being able to get a serious advantage over the opponent. It was Gorst who got to the hill first with an 8:7 lead over Filler. But the German stayed strong and won the 16th rack, making the match a hill-hill affair at 8:8. One rack would now decide who goes through and who is out. Gorst took his time-out to try and get his nerves together and maybe focus one more time on this match where the tension rose dramatically. Gorst got a good break shot with two balls down and an easy layout in front of him.
Earlier today, Mieszko Fortunski (POL) ousted Mark Gray (GBR) in the loser’s qualification round with 9:6. Another potential „top gun“ was eliminated from the event when Ruslan „The Siberian Train“ Chinakhov (RUS) was pipped to the post with 9:8 by fellow countryman Sergey Lutsker (RUS). In an epic clash, Jayson Shaw (GBR) defeated Alexander Kazakis (GRE) with 9:8.
Tomorrow, the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open will continue at 10:00 CET with matches from the last 16 players single elimination. The lineup is as follows:
